Pilates – History & Benefits

Joseph Hubertus Pilates grew up in Germany and was originally well known as a highly skilled boxer and gymnast. After WWI he developed a system of original exercises known as Contrology. Joseph Pilates devised this system to rehabilitate injured veterans and later developed equipment for the bedridden. In 1926 Joseph and his wife, Clara, arrived in New York City and opened a gym to practice Joseph’s work. It was then that Joseph began training dancers and Contrology became essential for many dancers improving their skills and healing them from injuries. Over the years, Joseph’s teachings became known as Pilates and are now being practiced all over the world.

Nowadays, Pilates is considered an anti-aging drug that changes bodies from the inside out. A classical approach to Pilates can provide improvement in posture, flexibility, core strength and stamina. Pilates challenges and strengthens deep abdominal muscles, it can aid in recovery from strain or injury and engages the mind as it deeply connects body, mind and spirit.
